From the liner notes:
To escape the pain of his current heartbreak, the poet Hoffmann begins to tell the story of his past loves. The doll Olympia, the courtesan Giulietta, and the sickly Antonia – these love stories also end in transience.
With elaborate sets and costumes creating a lavish spectacle, and the brilliant direction of renowned film director John Schlesinger, Offenbach's fantastical world is brought back to life with new vitality. Featuring Placido Domingo as Hoffmann and an exceptionally star-studded cast including Lucia Serra, Agnes Baltsa, and Ileana Cotrubaș as the three women in his life, it is rare to witness such a luxurious and magnificent operatic performance.
Georges Prêtre's conducting, a masterful blend of tension and elegant expression, is also impeccable.
