Description
This vintage tin is a rare, historically significant piece of Dallas, Texas retail and business history. This lithographed metal Clubman Pinaud talcum powder tin features a historic handwritten ink inscription on the bottom detailing its incredible provenance: Glendale Barber Shop, Glendale Shopping Center, Marsalis & Ann Arbor, 1962. The History & Provenance: The Glendale Barber Shop (located at 4410 S. Marsalis Ave in Dallas) was part of the legendary corporate barbershop empire founded by Johnny Graham (1918–1990). Johnny Graham was one of the most successful and prominent Black entrepreneurs in mid-century Texas, ultimately building a network of eight shops and founding Graham's Barber College. His massive contributions to the city's civil rights and business history are so significant that the state of Texas honored his legacy with an official Texas State Historical Marker near Fair Park. The 1962 date on this tin perfectly aligns with the exact era when Johnny Graham's business scaled rapidly across South Dallas, and when Mr. Graham likely stepped away from the barber chair but continued to oversee his growing enterprise, making this a true artifact of 1960s Texas business history.
