◇ Panax notoginseng
Panax notoginseng is a perennial plant of the Araliaceae family, native to Yunnan Province, China. It takes 3 to 7 years from seed to harvest, during which time it absorbs nutrients and energy from the soil. It is said that the land becomes so depleted after harvesting that even weeds cannot grow for over 10 years. Panax notoginseng, grown in this way, is also known in China as Jin Bu Huan (meaning more precious than gold) and was historically used for the purpose of eternal youth and longevity. Due to its rarity, it was considered a noble substance.
◇ Cordyceps sinensis
Cordyceps sinensis is classified as a fungus. In winter, it parasitizes insect larvae, forming a sclerotium. Eventually, the larva is consumed, but the mycelium continues to grow, and in summer, it emerges as a mushroom.
Cordyceps sinensis attaches to the surface of subterranean insect larvae and lives by feeding on the proteins within the larva's body. Cordyceps sinensis was first introduced as a folk remedy in Tibet in the 15th century, and later in China in the 18th century. It was consumed in meals for health and longevity purposes, considered a phantom mushroom.
◇ Phellinus linteus
Phellinus linteus is one of several types of mushrooms that parasitize mulberry trees and is also known as Sang Huang. It is mainly distributed in Southeast Asia, including Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. In Japan, it was named after Mesima Island (Mesima) in the Danjo Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture, where it was frequently collected. Phellinus linteus absorbs various nutrients from the mulberry tree it parasitizes as it grows. The mulberry tree has been called a sacred tree since ancient times and was considered beneficial for the body. The bark of the mulberry root, known as Sang Bai Pi, is used in traditional Chinese medicine, and its leaves and wood are said to have shown significant benefits for health recovery.
